I started learning web design when I was asked to teach the basics to high school students. I had already been teaching common computer applications, the basics of how the internet worked, and design applied to a variety of computer applications, engineering, and creating the school yearbook. So, I took online courses in web design, HTML, and CSS to learn the basics of web design and development. I have continued to improve my skills by completing the Web Design Certificate program at Anne Arundel Community College, and by designing and creating websites.
Web Design is a Lot Like Teaching
I left teaching in 2017 for a career in web design and development and am struck by the similarities between what a good web designer does and what a good teacher does.
- Create, discover, and present content that is engaging and accessible.
- Make the process of completing tasks easy to navigate and understand.
- Get feedback from users and use it to make improvements.
Technical Skills for Web Design and Development
- Preparing photos and graphics using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- Creating websites using HTML, CSS, and WordPress
- Adding interactivity with plug-ins, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL
Stepping Away from the Computer
And out the door, because I love to walk outdoors where I can enjoy the flowers, trees, birds, and insects. I have recently become a Master Watershed Steward so that I can work with the community on practices that lead to clean water and a sustainable landscape.
I also enjoy yoga, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
